Hipster Maple Butter coffee in Mason Jars

Empty-nesters and grandparents take note: serve this beverage up at your next family brunch and you will have Gen-Y and Gen-Z youngsters look up from their original edition leather-bound copy of The Flame Alphabet and give you a mildly impressed nod of approval.

If you are looking for a decadent way to kick-start your Sunday chill-in day, there is no better way than with a buttery-smooth maple syrup butter coffee. Unabashedly Hipster, this twist on coffee is liquid manna; not your regular cuppa Joe. The hipsters are onto something.

Ingredients

  • Ground coffee; French Market Coffee and Chicory Medium Dark Roast is perfect for this, Aussies can get this delivered by USA Foods (you can also use a pod machine, but will have to put the spices in the cups directly - use cautious restraint with quantities if this is the case)

  • Large mugs for serving

  • 1 mug of water per mug served

  • A dash of condensed milk to serve (you could also opt for a soy or nut milk - we’d recommend a good almond milk in this case; shift this bullet point to the “hipster” section if you choose to do this)

  • Coffee Maker (we recommend either a percolator or drip filter machine)

  • Get your Hipster on:

  • Replace the mugs with glass mason jars - old Vegemite jars are not appropriately Hipster, unless they are pre-1956, in which case they are über hipster

  • Replace the coffee brewing apparatus with a cold-filter contrivance; we are not even going to go there

  • 1 tsp butter per mug

  • 1-2 tsp maple syrup per mug (to sweeten to taste)

  • A pinch of salt for the coffee pot

  • A small sprinkle of ground cardamom for the coffee pot

  • A smattering of ground cloves for the coffee pot

  • A dash of ground cinnamon for the coffee pot + 1 small sprinkle per serve to garnish

  • Chocolate drinking powder to garnish

  • A thimble of dark rum per mug, to kick things up (optional, we recommend avoiding this with younger Gen-Zers)

Hipster Maple Butter Coffee in the Making (Ingredients)

See our guide to pantry essentials to find out more about these ingredients, our recommendations, and where to buy them.

Directions

  1. Put the appropriate amount of coffee in your coffee machine for the number you wish to serve (per coffee supplier/machine instructions). We tend to put in approx 1 heaped tbsp per mug, but this will vary depending on taste and the coffee/maker you are using.

  2. Sprinkle a tiny bit of salt on top of the coffee - we are talking a countable number of grains here!

  3. Sprinkle small amounts of the cinnamon, cardamom and cloves on top of the coffee

  4. Add the water to your coffee making contraption and set it going per manufacturer’s instructions

  5. Add 1-2 tsp Maple Syrup and 1 tsp butter to the bottom of each serving receptacle

  6. When the coffee is brewed and still hot, pour into each mug and stir to thoroughly dissolve the maple syrup and butter

  7. Add a dash of condensed milk (to taste) and the optional thimble of dark rum (if desired) and stir in

  8. Sprinkle with a dusting of cinnamon and/or chocolate powder and serve. Matches well with breakfast pastries, Canadian maple and bacon pancakes, or Hipster Steelcut Oats

Tip: For additional “#extra” points, serve the mugs/jars/latest hipster drink receptacle on a recycled burlap placemat, with vintage linen napkin receptacle holders, next to an old mechanical typewriter. Sprinkle the burlap placemat with coffee-beans in an acceptably self-aware—but-only-slightly-ironic pattern. Now that’s the makings of a #Lit weekend!
